Never was and never will be. One has to deal with artistic, financial, industry, and social pressures to deliver tightly budgeted projects that, ideally, will be critical darlings and set the international box-office on fire. And while it is the producer who greenlights and nourishes a project with his or her passion and commitment, more often than not other filmmakers \u2013 directors, actors, screenwriters \u2013 get most of the credit for the success. However, if the project fails to ignite the viewers\u2019 imagination and conquer the box-office, it is the producer who has to do most of the explaining and go to the office the next day to look for other projects to greenlight and nourish.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout the years, <strong>Camerimage<\/strong> has awarded some of the most inspiring and independent-thinking film producers around, including <strong>Jeremy Thomas<\/strong>, <strong>Richard Zanuck<\/strong>, and <strong>Robert Lantos<\/strong>. She never was in it for the money and fame but rather for the sake of making films that will last in the viewers\u2019 hearts and minds. Her name was an indicator of something unconventional and exciting. Among the films she steered through the muddy waters of project development are the now-classic and oft-imitated <strong>Alejandro Amen\u00e1bar\u2019s<\/strong> chiller <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>The Others<\/em><\/span> and <strong>Billy Ray\u2019s<\/strong> underappreciated journalist drama <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Shattered Glass<\/em><\/span>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Paula Wagner<\/strong> started out as an actress, but then, after recommendation by her then-agent <strong>Susan Smith<\/strong>, she became one of Hollywood\u2019s most powerful talent agents. Her thirteen-year-long tenure at the famed Creative Artists Agency saw hear signing and representing such future A-listers as <strong>Sean Penn<\/strong>, <strong>Val Kilmer<\/strong>, <strong>Demi Moore<\/strong>, and <strong>Liam Neeson<\/strong>. The company\u2019s first project, the <strong>Brian De Palma<\/strong>-directed theatrical revitalization of a cult TV show <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Mission: Impossible<\/em><\/span>, was a worldwide success. It brought them Nova Award for Most Promising Producers in Theatrical Motion Pictures, and gave birth to a franchise that lasts to this day. <strong>Cruise and Wagner<\/strong> also worked together on a number of other features, including <strong>Cameron Crowe\u2019s<\/strong> mystery\/romance <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Vanilla Sky<\/em><\/span>, based on <strong>Alejandro Amen\u00e1bar\u2019<\/strong>s <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Abre los ojos<\/em><\/span>, and adapted to star <strong>Tom Cruise<\/strong>. It was an unusual film, and performed well all over the world. There was also <strong>Edward Zwick\u2019s <\/strong><span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>The Last Samurai<\/em><\/span>, <strong>Steven Spielberg\u2019s<\/strong> science fiction epic <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>War of the Worlds<\/em><\/span>, which\u00a0<strong>Wagner<\/strong> executive produced, and <strong>Bryan Singer\u2019s<\/strong> ambitious historical thriller <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Valkyrie<\/em><\/span>, the latter one being supervised by Wagner as CEO and co-owner of the <strong>United Artists Entertainment, LLC<\/strong> film studio.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again, what mattered to her throughout all her years as a film producer, was the quality, which, ultimately, led <strong>Paula Wagner<\/strong> to end this journey and start another: that of a Broadway producer with a knack for risk-taking. One of them, made under the banner of <strong>Paula Wagner\u2019s<\/strong> new company <strong>Chestnut Ridge Productions<\/strong>, <strong>Camerimage<\/strong> participants will be able to experience at this year\u2019s edition. Namely, <strong>Reginald Hudlin\u2019s<\/strong> biopic\/courtroom drama <span style=\"color: #d29600;\"><em>Marshall<\/em><\/span>, the story of the breakthrough case of young lawyer Thurgood Marshall who later made history and became the first African-American justice serving in the Supreme Court of the United States. <strong>Chestnut Rigde Productions<\/strong> is also developing and producing film, television, theater, and new media projects.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Paula Wagner<\/strong> has shot films internationally including China, New Zealand and Australia. She is member of the AMPAS, served on the board of the Producers Guild, Film Forum in NY, The American Cinematheque and the National Film Preservation Foundation. She also produced both the 2011 and 2012 Producers Guild Awards show and the Motion Picture Academy&#8217;s 2013 Governors Awards show. Now, she will personally accept our <strong>Award to Producer with Visual Sensitivity<\/strong>, a distinction bestowed by <strong>Camerimage<\/strong> upon the creative and daring filmmakers with a great appreciation of the visual language of film.
