To commemorate the historic occasion, director Rodrigo Reyes offers a bold, hybrid cinema experience that mixes non-fiction and performative elements with components of a road movie. Through the eyes of a ghostly conquistador, Reyes recreates Hernán Cortez’s epic journey from the coasts of Veracruz to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, the site of contemporary Mexico City. As the anachronistic fictional character interacts with real victims and subjects of Mexico’s failed drug wars, the filmmaker portrays the country’s current humanitarian crisis as part of a brutal and unfinished colonial project, still in motion 499 years later.

Director: Rodrigo Reyes
Cinematographer: Alejandro Mejia
Produced by: La Maroma Producciones, RR Cinema
Country and year: Mexico, USA, 2019

ALTERED STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Altered States of Consciousness is a film about the possibilities of our brain. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights into autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. It opens a window for audiences into an intense and overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe. Moments in the lives of each of the characters are linked by the journey of a young Japanese boy through an epic landscape. Narrated passages from Naoki’s writing reflect on what his autism means to him and others, how his perception of the world differs, and why he acts in the way he does: the reason he jumps. The film distils these elements into a sensually rich tapestry that leads us to Naoki’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean there is nothing to say.

Director: Jerry Rothwell
Cinematographer: Ruben Woodin-Dechamps
Produced by: MetFilm Production
Country and year: UK, 2019

SIDIK AND THE PANTHER

For 25 long years, Sidik has been searching for a snow leopard in the war-scarred mountains of Kurdistan in northern Iraq. For the Chukchi, they are a chance to survive another winter, so once the land of Lorino warms in the sun, the hunters set off, thus provoking a clash of two worlds that, with every confrontation, inevitably approach the borders of extinction.

Original title: Wieloryb z Lorino
Director: Maciej Cuske
Cinematographer: Piotr Bernaś
Produced by: Pokromski Studio, Telewizja Polska
Country and year: Poland, 2019

We announce the line-up of the Documentary Features Competition “IMAGE OF THE WORLD AND WORLD IN IMAGES” of the 28th…

[525,524

post-24538","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wiadomosci-energacamerimage2020","category-energacamerimage2020
