Yesterday\u2019s Oscar\u00ae ceremony has officially concluded the exciting film awards season. For the last two months, the cinematography fans have had a chance to witness the awards being granted by the following associations: BAFTA, Critics\u2019 Choice, ASC, Film Independent and many more. The cinematography category abounded in the filmmakers who already had a chance to show their works to the\u00a0EnergaCAMERIMAGE<\/span>\u00a0audience back in 2021.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Academy Award competition has become an incredibly tight race. From the very beginning, the biggest chances had two distinguished filmmakers. The\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span>Power of the Dog<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>Ari Wegner<\/strong>\u00a0received the Critic\u2019s Choice Award and nominations from the British Society of Cinematographers (as well as nominations for the BAFTA and ASC Awards). On the other hand,\u00a0<\/span>Greig Fraser\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Dune\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>brought him the BAFTA and the American Society of Cinematographers Awards (also nominations for the awards from the BSC and the CCA). The newest Jane Campion\u2019s<\/strong> and Denis Villeneuve\u2019s<\/strong> productions have also brought them the greatest number of the Academy Award nominations. However, there could be only one winner.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also worth mentioning that both movies were screened at the\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE\u00a02021<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Greig Fraser<\/strong>\u00a0together with his collaborator \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Denis Villeneuve<\/strong>, personally presented the first part of their sci-fiction saga to the international audience, which was appreciated by the jury receiving the\u00a0<\/span>Bronze<\/strong> Frog<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Ari<\/strong> Wegner<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>also visited\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>talked<\/span>\u00a0about her experience concerning the collaboration with\u00a0<\/span>Jane Campion<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After this year\u2019s fierce competition, the Oscar\u00ae for Best Cinematography went to\u00a0<\/span>Greig<\/strong> Fraser<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>for<\/span>\u00a0Dune<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Congratulations Greig on the well-deserved award<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, the audience of the\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE\u00a0<\/strong>Festival had a chance to enjoy other films awarded by the Academy\u00ae, including<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Eyes\u00a0of\u00a0Tammy\u00a0Faye<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Best Actress in a Leading Role \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Jessica Chastain<\/strong>, Best Makeup and Hairstyling),\u00a0<\/span>King Richard<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Best Actor in a Leading Role \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Will Smith<\/strong>),\u00a0<\/span>Belfast\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>(Best Original Screenplay),\u00a0<\/span>No Time to Die<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0(Best Music (Original Song)) and\u00a0<\/span>Summer of Soul\u00a0(…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>(Best Documentary (Feature)). The Oscar\u00ae statuette in the Best Directing category was awarded to\u00a0<\/span>Jane Campion<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0<\/span>The Power of the Dog<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, while\u00a0<\/span>Dune<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>won in such categories as: Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Music (Original Score) and Best Sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

The choice of films competing in the Best Cinematography category was very consistent. Apart from the works of\u00a0<\/span>Ari Wegner<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>Greig Fraser<\/strong>, the other six productions were on the list of international associations with a potential distinction, four of which were shown at the\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2021<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Kenneth<\/strong> Branagh<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>together with\u00a0<\/span>Haris<\/strong> Zambarloukos\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>arrived at the Festival in order to show the effect of their cooperation \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Belfast<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>received nominations for the BAFTA, ASC and Critics\u2019 Choice Awards.\u00a0<\/span>Joel Coen<\/strong>\u00a0supported\u00a0<\/span>Brunon Delbonnel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in person in the race for the\u00a0<\/span>Golden Frog\u00a0<\/span>in the\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Main Competition.\u00a0<\/span>The Tragedy of Macbeth<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>presented as the opening screening (nominations for the Oscar\u00ae, BAFTA, ASC, BSC, Critics\u2019 Choice Awards) left Toru\u0144 with the\u00a0<\/span>Silver Frog<\/strong>. The screening of\u00a0<\/span>No Time to Die<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(the BAFTA nomination) at the Closing Gala ceremony was also honoured by the presence of the filmmakers:\u00a0<\/span>Linus Sandgren<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Cary Joji Fukunaga<\/strong>\u00a0handed the awards in the Student Etudes Competition, and conducted a seminar which was devoted to their work on the last adventures of James Bond with<\/span>\u00a0Daniel Craig<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0in the title role. During\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2021<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Joe Wright<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the head of the Main Competition jury \u2013 presented his latest movie\u00a0<\/span>Cyrano<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(the BSC Awards nominations) together with\u00a0<\/span>Seamus McGarvey<\/strong>, the cinematographer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The remaining significant movies were\u00a0<\/span>Nightmare Alley<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0(directed by\u00a0<\/span>Guillermo del Toro<\/strong>) with the photography by\u00a0<\/span>Dan Laustsen<\/strong>\u00a0(the Oscar\u00ae, BAFTA, ASC, Critics\u2019 Choice Awards nominations) and\u00a0<\/span>West Side Story<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0(directed by\u00a0<\/span>Steven Spielberg<\/strong>) with\u00a0<\/span>Janusz Kami\u0144ski\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>photography (the Oscar\u00ae, BSC, Critics\u2019 Choice Awards nominations).<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, the nominations for the Film Independent Award were not the reflection of other awards in the American film industry. This year\u2019s laureate was\u00a0<\/span>Eduard Grau<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for his film\u00a0<\/span>Passing<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(directed by\u00a0<\/span>Rebecca Hall<\/strong>). The director\u2019s work was appreciated at our Festival by being included in the Directors\u2019 Debuts Competition. The cinematographer met the audience after the film screening.<\/span><\/p>\n

As in previous years, alongside other film awards stirring emotions and stealing the attention with its Hollywood style, the European Film Awards were granted. This year\u2019s laureate of the European Cinematography was\u00a0<\/span>Crystel Fournier<\/span>, which was the appreciation for her work on the movie\u00a0<\/span>Great Freedom<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sebastian Meise<\/strong>\u00a0with this movie was nominated for the Directors\u2019 Debut Competition at the\u00a0<\/span>EnergaCAMERIMAGE\u00a02021<\/strong><\/span>. The main award went to\u00a0<\/span>Jasmili \u017dbani\u0107\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Quo Vadis, Aida?<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>beating other competitors, among others,\u00a0<\/span>Paolo Sorrentino\u2019s\u00a0The Hand of God<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Julia Ducournau\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Titane<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
