Being a producer is possibly one of the most ambiguous professions within the film industry as it never was, is or will be only about making a project financially sound but also \u2013 no, primarily \u2013 about dealing with different kinds of pressures to nourish it artistically and creatively so that it becomes the best possible version of itself. Yes, money is important \u2013 well, indispensable \u2013 but a producer\u2019s job is to spend the money responsibly to surround a project with people who will develop its potential. Throughout the years, EnergaCAMERIMAGE Film Festival<\/strong> <\/span>has awarded some of the most inspiring and independent-thinking film producers around, including Jeremy Thomas<\/strong>, Richard Zanuck<\/strong>, Paula Wagner<\/strong>, Robert Lantos<\/strong>, and Frank Spotnitz<\/strong>. It is our great pleasure to announce that this year\u2019s EnergaCAMERIMAGE Award for Producer with Unique Visual Sensitivity<\/strong> will be presented to Jon Kilik<\/strong> who nourished some of the best independent American films of the last thirty years and supported filmmakers such as Spike Lee<\/strong>, Julian Schnabel<\/strong>, Gary Ross<\/strong>, Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/strong>, Bennett Miller<\/strong>, Jim Jarmusch<\/strong>, Francis Lawrence<\/strong>, Oliver Stone<\/strong>, Robert Altman<\/strong> and actors-turned-directors Robert De Niro<\/strong>, Tim Robbins<\/strong>, Ed Harris<\/strong>, Sean Penn<\/strong> and Tony Goldwyn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nJon Kilik<\/em><\/p>\n

\nJon Kilik’s<\/strong> first ‘produced by’ credit came in 1987 when he and his New Jersey school friend Paul Mones<\/strong> developed Mones’<\/strong> college theater piece into the independent feature The Beat<\/span><\/em> (1988). That first producer credit, after 7 years of pushing scripts with Mones<\/strong> and various production jobs on such films as Stardust Memories<\/span><\/em>, Sophie’s Choice<\/span><\/em>, Prizzi’s Honor<\/span><\/em> and Raising Arizona<\/span><\/em>, eventually led to an introduction to Spike Lee<\/strong> in 1987 and a collaboration that started with Do the Right Thing<\/span><\/em> (1989) and has continued for 17 films including, Malcolm X<\/span><\/em>, Clockers<\/span><\/em>, He Got Game<\/span><\/em>, Inside Man<\/span><\/em> and Da 5 Bloods<\/span><\/em> among others. Kilik’s<\/strong> other long-term director-producer relationship \u2013 with Julian Schnabel<\/strong> \u2013 began in 1996 with Basquiat<\/span><\/em> and gave the world such films as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly<\/span><\/em> (Golden Globe winner for Best Foreign Language Film, 4 Academy Award Nominations and Golden Frog in 2007 for cinematographer Janusz Kami\u0144ski<\/strong>), Before Night Fall<\/span><\/em>, and At Eternity’s Gate<\/span><\/em>. Other Kilik<\/strong> productions include Kilik’s<\/strong> Academy Award\u00ae<\/sup> nomination for Best Picture Babel<\/span><\/em>, and Academy Award\u00ae<\/sup> nomination Best Foreign Film, Biutiful<\/span><\/em> (Alejandro Gonzalez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/strong>), Foxcatcher<\/span><\/em> (Bennett Miller<\/strong><\/span>), A Bronx Tale<\/span><\/em> (Robert De Niro<\/strong>), Dead Man Walking<\/em> <\/span>(Tim Robbins<\/strong>), Broken Flowers<\/span><\/em>, Gimme Danger<\/span> <\/em>(Jim Jarmusch<\/strong>), Pleasantville<\/span> <\/em>and Free State of Jones <\/em><\/span>(Gary Ross<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nKilik<\/strong> also produced all four original films of The Hunger Games<\/span><\/em> franchise that became a world wide commercial and critical phenomenon , and has proven to be a landmark in its cautionary description of where humanity could be headed. Kilik<\/strong> is and always has been a film producer who is primarily interested in developing and nourishing thought-provoking movies that may or may not sit well with audiences in different parts of the world but they invariably provide intelligent entertainment that presents various perspectives of looking and dealing with the world we live in and the human condition. And for that we will always be grateful to Jon Kilik<\/strong>. We are therefore exhilarated that he will come to Toru\u0144<\/strong> this November to accept the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Award for Producer with Unique Visual Sensitivity<\/strong> and meet with the festival’s participants to discuss his ever-growing producer’s legacy and attitude towards the industry.
