Seresin recently completed cinematographic duties on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (taking over from Emmanuel Lubezki, AMC, ASC), giving him first-hand experience of the ALEXA/ARRIRAW combination that has become a popular choice for major motion pictures.

“Historically, it has been lenses rather than cameras that have concerned me most in my world of cinematography,” says Seresin. “The ARRI ALEXA has threatened that; in fact it has changed my mind, radically. My first experience with the ALEXA was stunning…although I still love the ARRICAM!”

Seresin will be joined by professional DIT Pete Marsden, ARRI’s Bill Lovell and Marc Dando of Codex to demonstrate the use of the Codex OnBoard recorder to capture ARRIRAW with ALEXA. The two cinematographers will be working with the ARRI ALEXA Studio, creating a variety of lighting situations and visual approaches with help from the audience.

Schaefer notes, “If this workshop could be a film it might be Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon [1950]. Let’s see how each of us imagines and interprets a scene differently to create a look.”

The workshop will explore the benefits to television productions of in-camera ProRes recording with ALEXA. In addition, Schaefer and Ruhe will demonstrate how to use the ARRI Look Creator to design unique ARRI Look Files, allowing distinct visual looks to be applied and viewed during a shoot.

PANAVISION WORKSHOPS

– PANALUX SEMINAR
Lighting Tools and Techniques

Tuesday, 29th November, 11.00-13.00

Leading cinematographers will discuss contemporary lighting tools and techniques for location and sound stage work, giving examples from their own experiences, and with questions and comments from the audience.
moderated by Benjamin B

– PANAVISION SEMINAR
John Seale Master Class

Tuesday, 29th November, 14.00-17.00

An in-depth seminar on cinematography, continuity and editing, illustrated by scenes from John Seale’s films, and with questions and comments from the audience.
moderated by Benjamin B

MASTERCLASS: THE 3D FRAME
DP Denis Rouden & Stereographer Alain Derobe
Movement in 3D, moderated by Benjamin Bergery

Friday, 2nd December, 14.30 – 16.30

Stereographer Alain Derobe & cinematographer Denis Rouden AFC (who just completed shooting of Asterix’ new adventures in 3D), will discuss the challenges of 3D filmmaking, with an emphasis on approaches to framing, operating and camera movement.
Moderator: Benjamin B, thefilmbook.com

SHOOTING FOR POSTPRODUCTION

With Alvernia Studios and K5600

Monday, 28th November, 13.00-16.00

The work of cinematographer has become inseparable with digital image processing.
