Delli Colli, who died several months ago, is a laureate of CAMERIMAGE 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. They considered him as: “a tiny man, who managed to make enormous things for the cinema”.

Exactly, Delli Colli played a significant part in of the history of the cinema. He is a creator of photography to the majority of Paolo Pasolini’s and Dino Risi’s movies. He was a cooperator of Frederico Fellini, Sergio Leone, Roman Polański and a cinematographer of such excellent movies like: “Once Upon a Time in America”, “The Name of the Rose”, “Life is Beautiful”, “Bitter Moon”, “Death and The Maiden”.

“I would like to compare him to Picasso. Picasso believed that a one half of the success is a good technique, the second half is art” – told Roberto Girometti, the director of Italian Association of Cinematographers and an old Delli Colli’s friend. “Exactly the same was Tonino, he combined ideal technique with outstanding sense of art.“ According to Girometti, the Colli’s masterpiece “The Name of the Rose”, that was presented on Saturday at Camerimage, is: “the most beautifully filmed movie all over the world”.

“He had an unique ability to ‘get into’ the story” – the second guest of this meeting , cinematographer Roberto d’Ettore Piazzolli added. “His cinematography did not dominate the plot, but it also didn’t play a serving role to it. It cooperated with the film perfectly “ saidPiazzolli.

Delli Colli was an extremely important person to the cinematographers society in Italy. “It was him, who in 1950 founded our cinematographers’ association, as a second such assembly in the world. He should be the honorary president of our association forever” – said Girometti.

“We shouldn’t speak of Tonino as only of the technician. He was full of humor, irony, life and energy. His cinematography was the expression of life” – said Piazzolli. “He was rather a short man, but he made great things fot the cinema” – he ended.

Delli Colli died suddenly a few months before the CAMERIMAGE festival. He managed to prepare a special short movie, on which he greets the festival guests.

The other CAMERIMAGE festival awards for special achievements in the film art will go to Polish actor GUSTAW HOLOUBEK, and the Award for the Polish Duo of Director-Cinematographer will go to KAZIMIERZ KUTZ and WIESŁAW ZDORT.

On Saturday’s morning in The Grand Theater, friends of Tonino Delli Colli reminisced this genuine cinematographer.
