XII International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage November 27th - December 4th 2004, Łódz

The twelve edition of the Festival was held under the patronage and thanks to significant financial support of the Ministry of Culture, City Council of Łódz, Marshall of Łódz Voivodeship and with the financial support of European Community program - MEDIA DESK. One of the integral parts of the Festival is also a Student Films Festival. This year we presented 46 etudes chose from over 150 entries. 24 films were presented in the Competition and 22 in World Panorama. The Competition was judged by: Michael Chapman, Jury President Javier Aguirresarobe, Alain Choquart, Pierre Lhomme, Michael Neubauer, Billy Williams. In the Competition we presented: Airstream (Germany), At the Railroad Crossing (Poland), The Body of Mine (Poland), The Brother (Australia), Day Like Other Days (Poland), An Eye for an Eye (Germany), The Happiness Thief (UK), His Girlfriend (Poland), I Don't Know (Poland), The Invisible Woman (Germany), Lilith (Poland), Loose Contact (Switzerland), Manege (Poland), Marty (USA), The Natural Route (Spain), The Next (Spain), Pre Mortem (India), Sugar Lumps (Spain), Tin Man (Mexico), Trail of Shadow (Poland), Visions (Poland), Winter (Poland), Woman From the Dark (Poland), You Are There (Poland). In the World Panorama we presented: Abimes (France), Affection (Poland), Annaottoanna (Germany), Between Us (UK), Black Berries (Australia), At the Lake (Poland), Escape! (Germany), Eva (Poland), The Fifth Season (Poland), The First Vampire (USA), Forever Hold Your Peace (Spain), Hi Maya (Switzerland), Night in a Hotel (Slovakia), Pilou (France), Rain is Falling (Germany), Dancer (Poland), Seventy-Seven Below (USA), Small People (Poland), Tuesday (Germany), The Virus (Hungary), Wednesday Afternoon (USA). The Festival is not consisting of the film presentations only. During the Festival the guests are able to take part in many meetings with the films creators. There are press conferences, workshops, seminars and other accompanying events. On Sunday, November 28th Moritz Laube and Christel Jaekel led editing workshops in Lodz Film School. Working with Wim Wenders (Land of Planty) was led by Moritz Laube and Christel Jaekel presented DNA Technology and Avid Adrenaline. Thanks to PANAVISION, Michael Chapman led the workshops in Opus Film Studio. Using PANAVISION equipment and some lighting equipment he presented his amazing cinematography background. On Thursday, December 1st, Rodrigo Prieto led workshops for students using the lighting and camera equipment from ARRI. Furthermore, thanks to ARRI and AVID and with the help and support of Sławomir Idziak, the students had a chance to take part in a totally new workshops. During the firsts days of the Festival students were shooting small scenes and during the second part of the Festival they were editing. All of these activities took place in the Festival Centre and the Festival audience had a chance not only to see it but also take part in it. The results were shown during the Closing Ceremony. During this year Festival students had also a chance to take part in many seminars led by famous cinematographers and directors. The seminars were led by: Manoel De Oliveira, David Watkin, Dick Pope, Krzysztof Zanussi, Sławomir Idziak, Oliver Stapleton, Mike Figgis, Pierre Lhomme, Andrzej Żuławski, Chris Doyle, Rodrigo Prietro, Oliver Stone czy Phedon Papamichael. The New State of the Art for Cine Lenses - ARRI and ZEISS ARRICAM system - ARRI presentation SACHTLER presentation LICHT TECHNIK presentation KODAK Look Management System and Invite Daylight In - KODAK presentation Some of presentations took place in the conference room and some of them on the stands. At this year Festival the new Award was introduced - Technical Award in the field of production and postproduction. The Jury consisting of Jost Vacano, Andrzej Jaroszewicz and Suki Medenčević was judging the inventory and necessity of particular solution to the production and postproduction aims. Media Desk Poland organised a presentation called: How to start getting Media Plus funds? Development, production, distribution - the opportunities of European Union Programme. During this Festival the lowest level of the Festival Centre belonged entirely to Mike Figgis. MIKE FIGGIS LEVEL included the exhibition 150 photos specially arranged in this area. Furthermore, the audience saw a special installation where 2 projectors and 9 plasma screens were used. It was one of the most attractives events during Camerimage. Another exhibition in the Festival Centre was called Witold Gombrowicz Vence - Chiavarai 1965 - 1968. There were photos taken by Bohdan Paczowski and presenting Witold Gombrowicza. The exhibition was accompanied by screenings of two films I Gombrowicz directed by Andrzej Wolski and shot by Piotr Jaxa as well as Rozdarcie, czyli Gombro w Berlinie directed by Wiesław Saniewski and shot by Romuald Liszka. Camerimage was also accompanied this year by the exhibition organised by Goethe Institute and called Fritz Lang, Film Images that took place in the Museum of Film. In the ATLAS SZTUKI Gallery Tadeusz Piechura presented his last works called Plakat+. This year the programme of the Festival was very attractive. Nevertheless, the descriptions given above are not presenting all the events that took place during our event. There are a few more that are worth to be mentioned: On Sunday, November 28th there was a placing of the commemorative Star for Zygmunt Samosiuk at Piotrkowska Street followed by the screening of one of his movies called The Birch Wood directed by Andrzej Wajda. On Wednesday, December 1st, ARRI GB and British Society of Cinematographers organised an informal meeting of all cinematographers visited the Festival to discuss the future of their role in the film business. On Thursday, December 2nd KODAK organised an annual KODAK STUDENTS PARTY and on Friday, December 3rd, following Camerimage tradition KODAK invited over 150 guests to take part in their Special Dinner for Cinematographers. Everyday our guests, students and volunteers had a chance to meet, dance and sing in the Festival Pub called EVERGREEN. Coma, Mikrowafle, Hedone, Sistars, Adam Nowak Band and I Stadt were playing there. The twelve edition of Camerimage Festival was closed during the Closing Ceremony on Saturday, December 4th. It was the biggest Festival so far and we had enormous pleasure to host real starts of cinematography, acting and directing. We also hosted much more guests than during the previous editions.
