ARRI SEMINAR: Creativity in Motion – use of TRINITY with Joerg Schenten

ARRI TRINITY CAMERA STABILIZER TRINITY, flagship of ARRI’s CSS (Camera Stabilizer Systems) product range, is the first hybrid camera stabilizer to combine mechanical stabilization with active electronic gimbal stabilization. This results in five axes of control and enables uniquely fluid and precisely controlled movements for total creative freedom.

Attendees at this seminar will get a hands-on overview of the TRINITY stabilizer and a live demonstration of its many application possibilities. Case studies will be presented, with clips screened from showreel and training videos. Direct audience interaction will be encouraged via a Q&A session.

Joining ARRI Product Manager Curt Schaller will be camera operator Joerg Schenten SOA, BVK, who has used TRINITY on numerous professional shoots in his native Germany, including the feature films Spielmacher and Mittelreich, and the TV series Pastewka and Sankt Maik. “As a professional I like to utilize the best tools out there and the TRINITY is exactly that,” says Schenten. “It allows me to move the camera in such an unrestricted and beautifully elegant way, like no other bodymounted stabilization system could do. Classic mechanical stabilization had reached its peak and ARRI was willing to take the next step. The challenge is to build an understanding of the unique natur e of this tool and how it can be used.”

ARRI SEMINAR: International Support Program

“Let’s Work Together”

A seminar on how ARRI supports new filmmakers with director Wanuri Kahiu (Rafiki) & DP Toby Oliver ACS (Wildling)

INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM

ARRI’s Mandy Rahn gives an overview of the International Support Program, a global initiative to help launch the next generation of cinematic storytellers. Through the program, producers can apply for multifaceted support from ARRI, from co-production, development and state-of-the-art equipment to postproduction and international sales.

Both of the feature films to have been assisted by the program since its launch in 2016 will be examined in the seminar. Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu will discuss her movie Rafiki, shot by Christopher Wessels, while cinematographer Toby Oliver ACS will talk about his collaboration with first-time director Fritz Böhm on Wildling.

Kahiu’s debut feature, From A Whisper, won prizes at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, the Zanzibar International Film Festival and the Kenya Film and TV Awards. Her recent short Pumzi picked up awards at the Carthage and Cannes Independent Film Festivals. Australian-born Oliver, whose work encompasses feature films, documentaries and television, was named by Variety as one of 10 cinematographers to watch in 2017. His recent credits include Get Out (screening at Camerimage), Happy Death Day and The Darkness.

An interview-based documentary

Celebrating 100 years of ARRI

This documentary film, specially edited for Camerimage, draws on just some of the more than 200 video interviews ARRI conducted with international filmmakers in the lead-up to its centenary celebrations in 2017.

In September 1917, August Arnold and Robert Richter rented a small former shoemaker’s store on Türkenstrasse in Munich and set up shop as a film technology firm. Taking the first two letters of their surnames, they christened their new enterprise ARRI.

On the occasion of its 100^th anniversary, ARRI reached out to cinematographers, directors, lighting technicians, inventors and historians. The response was overwhelming – hundreds of people came forward to be interviewed. They spoke about their passion for telling stories, their love of film and their individual experiences with ARRI.

All of the interviews are available to view on the ARRI website, alongside an interactive timeline that allows visitors to explore the history of ARRI products, services, end users and milestone productions. Linking every anecdote and historical event is ARRI’s belief in empowering storytellers to realize their vision.

That philosophy still defines the company on its 100^th birthday; it always will.

A complete overview of High Dynamic Range workflows

ARRI ACADEMY HDR MASTER CLASS

During the first section of this ARRI Academy Master Class, cinematographer Karl Walter Lindenlaub ASC will demonstrate how to light and shoot a built set with HDR deliverables in mind. Experts from ARRI and FilmLight will then work with the footage shot by Lindenlaub, showing how to postproduce images for final viewing on HDR TV or cinema screens.

Currently shooting Driven with director Nick Hamm, Lindenlaub’s other recent work includes Underworld: Blood Wars, Revolt and the two-part television movie Houdini, for which he received an Emmy nomination. He is also known for Michael Caton-Jones’ Rob Roy, Garry Marshall’s The Princess Diaries, Jon Avnet’s Up Close and Personal, Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day and Stargate, Jan de Bont’s The Haunting, Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book and Andrew Adamson’s The Chronicles of Narnia.

“HDR is here, whether we like it or not, and needs to be understood by cinematographers,” says Lindenlaub. “The most important issue for us is to stay in control of the image across all deliverables. We should be able to decide what is visible in the highlights and what is supposed to be black. The more we learn about this new display format, the better we can take advantage of it.”

Due to the nature of this Master Class and of the venue, seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
