Last year we have introduced a new section to Camerimage program – 3D Films Competition. A heated debate that have arisen between the Festival's participants – both regular viewers and industry professionals – made us realize that we hit the jackpot. Only few years back the growing infatuation of cinema and 3D technology was considered a mere fling, but today we are fully aware of the fact that this is a serious relationship which, in the close future, will inevitably merge the art of cinematographers with the world of 3D stereographers.

3D Films Competition is organized by Camerimage and International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society, the organization consisting of more than 1,800 professional members in over 20 countries around the world, whose task is to advance the creative arts and sciences of stereoscopic 3D and 4K.

Last year the international Jury, under the chairmanship of Barry Sandrew, Ph.D. awarded two films: Gravity, dir. Alfonso Cuarón, cin. Emmanuel Lubezki, as the Best 3D Dramatic Motion Picture, and Pina, dir. Wim Wenders, cin. Hélene Louvart, as the Best 3D Documentary Film. We will soon announce the line-up of this year's competition. We hope the selected films will lead to a fascinating dialogue about the ways 3D can enrich visual storytelling and the technology's role within the future of cinema.

The films will be judged by an international Jury, consisting of films industry members actively working with 3D and assisting different filmmakers in using the technology's numerous advantages in their projects.

• Jim Chabin - the President of International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society, and has served, among many others, as President of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Prime Time Emmys). Over the last seven years Chabin has logged over one million air miles to host, market, or executive produce more than 100 events in Hollywood, New York, Dubai, Singapore, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Vienna, Athens, Mumbai, London, Moscow and Berlin.
  
  
• Barry Sandrew, Ph.D. - is a member of International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society's Board of Governors. He is an internationally recognized visual effects pioneer and digital imaging expert with more than 14 VFX patents and 23 years of feature film and TV experience. Dr. Sandrew founded Legend3D, Inc. one of the leading 3D conversion companies and was founder of the pioneer colorization company American Film Technologies. Prior to working in feature film production he was staff neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
  
  
• Phil "Capt 3D" McNally - has just joined Condition One as Stereoscopic VFX supervisor. Prior to that he was in charge of all things stereoscopic for Dreamworks Animation where he worked on the 3D releases including Turbo, The Croods, Madagascar 3, Puss in Boots, How to Train Your Dragon and Monsters vs Aliens.
  
  
• Markus Lanxinger - a Stereographer/Stereoscopic Supervisor with extensive work experience in Stereoscopic 3D ranging from Hollywood productions such as Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Amazing Spiderman to projects in emerging markets (India, Thailand, Hong Kong, China).
  
  
• Steve Schklair - the founder and CEO of 3ality and a former senior executive at Digital Domain. His credits include 3D producer for Stalingrad, Britney Spears Live: The Femme Fatale Tour, and as 3D and Digital Image Producer for the groundbreaking live concert film, U2 3D.  Schklair has set the tone for 3ality’s visionary native S3D and is recognized  for providing the 3D technology and systems utilized on all The Hobbitfilms, The Great Gastsby, The Amazing Spider-Man, Prometheus, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D, as well as this summer’s blockbuster films, Transformers Age of Extinction and X-Men Days of Future Past.
  
  
• Grant Anderson - an established producer, visual effects supervisor, and digital artist in the film industry. His career in stereo 3D began with Beowulf 3D and continued as stereoscopic supervisor on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Green Hornet. He recently served as an advisor on Columbia Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-Man.
  
  
• Glen MacPherson - a Canadian-born cinematographer with over 20 years of experience on his slate. He was one of the early adopters of 3D technology which he fully embraced in films like The Final Destination, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, The Three Musketeers, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Pompeii.

3D Films Competition at Camerimage Festival is not only about film screenings, but also meetings and Q&A's with the jurors and the filmmakers who chose shooting their projects in 3D.
