The International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography CAMERIMAGE is not only about wonderful films and fantastic workshops, seminars, lectures or exhibitions. It is also a place where you can meet professionals from around the world who probably shot, edited or directed the films that made you love cinema, or have the potential to do that for the future generations of moviegoers. Here is the fourth of a few newsletters that we will send out to introduce the phenomenal guests of Camerimage 2013 - the true celebrities of our Festival.

DECLAN QUINN

American cinematographer, born in 1957 in Chicago. His family originates from Ireland, his Irish name is Deaglán Ỏ Cuinn. Member of ASC and ISC, which he co-founded in 2010. He began his career shooting music videos; he worked for U2 and The Smashing Pumpkins. His life on the verge of two cultures is mirrored by his long-term collaboration with Mira Nair, an American film director of Indian origin. Together they made the Indian segment of 11.09.01, an anthology film commemorating the World Trade Center attacks, a Givenchy perfume commercial with Uma Thurman and five films, including Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, for which he received his second (out of three) Independent Spirit Award. In 2005 he was on the Main Competition jury at Camerimage Festival.

ANTHONY DOD MANTLE

British (half-Scottish) cinematographer, born in 1955 in Oxford. He spent his youth traveling around the world and became a cinematographer when he turned thirty. Member of ASC, BSC and, since 1989, DFF. In 1985 he moved to Denmark, where he has collaborated with Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, with whom he made six films. As the first cinematographer in the history of British television, he used the RED One digital camera on a TV show Wallander. He has already attended Camerimage festival six times and in 2008, for his cinematography on Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle he received an Oscar, a BAFTA, a European Film Award and a Golden Frog. He was also nominated for Golden Frog for Festen, Mifune and 127 Hours. This year he is nominated again for Rush, a film directed by Ron Howard.

DENIS LENOIR

French cinematographer, born in 1949 in Paris. Member of ASC and co-founder of AFC. He grew up on films shown in the Parisian Cinématèque. Driven by his love for cinema he has quit medical studies. He shot his first film, Sotelo, directed by Raúl Ruiz, with whom he met on set two more times, in 1979. He was awarded an Emmy nomination and an ASC award for a TV show Uprising. He is the co-author of the book about John Cassavetes. He attended Camerimage Festival twice. In 2002 he received a Bronze Frog for Demonlover by Oliver Assayas, with whom he made 13 films, while four years later he was on the Main Competition jury.

PETER MENZIES JR.

Australian cinematographer, born in Sydney. Member of ACS. Son of a director and cinematographer Peter Menzies, he started working on set when he was just 17. He collaborated with such action film titans as Simon West, John McTiernan, with whom he made Die Hard: With a Vengeance and The 13th Warrior, and Louis Leterrier. Some of the biggest blockbusters in recent years wouldn't exist without his dynamic cinematography: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Spider-Man 2 or The Incredible Hulk, to name but a few. For his work he received two Australia Television Awards and London International Advertising Award. He made two films with Roger Donaldson, who was the head of the Main Competition jury at Camerimage Festival in 2011.

JOHN SCHWARTZMAN

American cinematographer, born in 1960 in Los Angeles. Member of ASC. Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas wrote him a letter of recommendation for the university, while none other than Conrad Hall encouraged him to pursue his career as a cinematographer. Recognized as one of the best action cinematographers, he became famous thanks to collaboration with his childhood friend, Michael Bay. Together they shot commercials, music videos and three films: The Rock, Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. He also made Green Hornet by Michel Gondry and The Amazing Spider-Man by Marc Webb.

CALEB DESCHANEL

American cinematographer and director, born in 1944 in Philadelphia. Member of ASC, in 2010 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from this organization. He developed an interest in film during his studies at the prestigious John Hopkins University, where he staged happenings with a well-known editor, Walter Murch. He began his career as an assistant to Gordon Willis. He played a key role in developing the Steadicam and the Skycam systems. In 1985 he turned to commercials, eight years later he reintroduced himself to the cinema audience with a film It Could Happen to You. Five times nominated for an Oscar for The Right Stuff, The Natural, Fly Away Home, The Patriot and The Passion of the Christ, both born out of collaboration with Mel Gibson. He worked three times with Hal Ashby, for his cinematography on Being There he received a National Society of Film Critics Award.
