The International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography CAMERIMAGE is not only about wonderful films and fantastic workshops, seminars, lectures or exhibitions. It is also a place where you can meet professionals from around the world who probably shot, edited or directed the films that made you love cinema, or have the potential to do that for the future generations of moviegoers. Here is the second of a few newsletters that we will send out to introduce the phenomenal guests of Camerimage 2013 - the true celebrities of our Festival.

BRUNO DELBONNEL

French cinematographer, born in 1957 in Nancy. Member of the French Society of Cinematographers. He won international acclaim with Jean-Pierre Jeunet'sAmélie (European Film Award for cinematography). A Very Long Engagement (awarded by the ASC) is yet another proof of extraordinary cooperation between these two artists. Delbonnel skillfully combines a contrast of strongly saturated colors with a composition of images based on a play of light and shadow for creating dream-like atmosphere of characters' inner worlds, consisting of both emotional warmth and nightmarish chill. This remarkable style brought him to work with Tim Burton on Dark Shadows and the soon-to-be-completed Big Eyes. Delbonnel was also the cinematographer of, among others, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by David Yates, Faust by Aleksandr Sokurov and Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen brothers. He has been nominated for Oscar three times so far. In 2007 he won the Silver Frog for Across the Universe by Julie Taymor. In 2006 and 2009 he worked as a jury member at the Camerimage Festival.

JOST VACANO

German cinematographer born in 1934, in Osnabrück. Member of the ASC and the bvk. His filmography features over 60 titles. In an early stage of his career Vacano cooperated with the iconic German directors Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta shooting The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum. His cinematography for Wolfgang Petersen'sDas Boot (1981) still strikes the viewer with its claustrophobic atmosphere of interior scenes as well as both realistic and spectacular shots of marine fights. This work won him an Oscar nomination and a ticket to Hollywood. He was also the cinematographer of a cult fantasy movie The NeverEnding Story by Wolfgang Petersen. Throughout the ‘90s Vacano collaborated with director Paul Varhoeven on numerous popular hits such as RoboCop, Total Recall, Showgirls and Hollow Man. Vacano is one of the most involved among long-term friends of the Camerimage Festival, which he has attended several times, working in various juries as well as participating in Festival debates.

STEVEN FIERBERG

American cinematographer, born in Detroit. Member of the ASC. His cinematography in the TV film Attila won him an ASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. Fierberg teaches at New York University and American Film Institute. Some of the most intriguing positions in his filmography are Steven Shainberg'sSecretary, where both subtle and suggestive images evoke a highly sensual atmosphere of an unconventional romance, and Sally Potter'sRage, which employs pure aesthetics of interview shots stripped of any decoration for development of a criminal suspense. Fierberg's body of work also includes such films as Joel Schumacher'sTwelve, Alex Cox'sRepo Chick, and Ed Zwick'sLove and Other Drugs. He has done camerawork for 25 episodes of the popular TV series Entourage. Steven Fierberg attended the Camerimage Festival in 2011, where he was on the jury of the Cinematographers' Debut Competition.

REED MORANO

American cinematographer, born in 1977 in Omaha, Nebraska. Member of the ASC, recently invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. One of the most interesting female cinematographers of the young generation, associated mainly with independent cinema. In 2011 Morano received Kodak Vision Award. As cinematographer she has collaborated with Courtney Hunt on the shoot of widely recognized Frozen River, Elgin James on Little Birds, twice with Rob Reiner - on The Magic of Belle Isle and And So It Goes (still in post-production) - and many others. One of the most recent films she has shot, Kill Your Darlings by John Krokidas, will be shown at this year's Camerimage Festival.

STEPHEN LIGHTHILL

American cinematographer. Senior Filmmaker-in-residence at the AFI. President of the ASC in years 2012 - 2013. Among prestigious awards he has received is the President's Award of the Society of Camera Operators (2000). Filming for CBS News and 60 Minutes, Stephen Lighthill created one of the first 16mm shoulder-held news cameras. Among the many documentaries he has filmed are the Maysles Brothers'Gimme Shelter and Mark Kitchell'sBerkeley in the ‘60s. Lighthill served as director of photography on the TV series Vietnam War Story for HBO, and the network primetime series, Earth 2, Nash Bridges and The Huntress. In 2005, he returned to documentaries with HBO's Boffo! Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters and The Alzheimer's Project: Caregivers. This year Stephen Lighthill will visit Camerimage Festival for the third time in its history. In years 2011 and 2012 he worked as jury member of the Polish Films Competition and the Feature Documentary Films Competition accordingly.

TIMO SALMINEN

Finnish cinematographer, born in 1952 in Helsinki. He has been nominated for the European Film Award twice, and has won two Jussi awards of the Finnish Film Foundation. A long-time collaborator of director Aki Kaurismäki, with whom he has made more than twenty films, including Le Havre, Lights in the Dusk, The Man Without a Past, Drifting Clouds and Bohemian Life. The visual side of all these films strikes the viewer as remarkably cohesive, combining a bit surreal choice of color with exceptionally balanced composition of images. Timo Salminen has attended five editions of the Camerimage Festival. In 1999, he won the Bronze Frog award for Aki Kaurismäki'sJuha. At the 12th Camerimage Festival, he was recognized for his collaboration with this director with the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award. The Man Without a Past and Le Havre were also selected for the Main Competition in 2002 and in 2011 accordingly. In 2010, Timo Salminen was a jury member of the Directors' Debuts Competition.
