FIRST HALF OF THE MAIN COMPETITION LINE-UP ANNOUNCED!

The Main Competition with the Golden Frog Award has been the most important part of the Festival since the first edition of the Festival in 1993. From the very beginning the idea behind the competition has been to present feature films with image that significantly contributes to the way a story is told. The visual value of these films results from cooperation between a director and a cinematographer. The Main Competition emphasizes the enormous contribution of the cinematographer to the art of film.

Here are the first 7 films of Camerimage 2013 Main Competition line-up:
    Burning Bush, The (Horící ker), cin. Martin Strba, dir. Agnieszka Holland; Polish distributor: HBO Poland Sp. z o.o.

    Burning Bush is the first fiction film about Jan Palach. In January 1969 a young man in his twenties from Prague, Czech Republic, committed suicide by self-immolation. It was a form of protest against the Warsaw Pact's military intervention that put an end to the Prague Spring and the hopes of the Czechs and the Slovaks to create a normal form of socialism. Palach's death shocked the world, becoming the catalyst of changes in Czechoslovak society. The film focuses on the suit brought by Palach's family against Vilém Nový of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, who affronted the memory of Jan. The defendant of that brave young man was Dagmar Buresova.

    Estela is a 12 year old girl who has just fallen crazily in love with a young police cadet. They both have to deal with drugs, though each in a different way. It leads to a conflict that love will try to overcome. The police officer wants to run away with her and get married. Trying to achieve this dream, Estela's family will have to live through the violence which is devastating the region.

    Home from Home - Chronicle of a Vision (Die Andere Heimat - Chronik einer Sehnsucht), cin. Gernot Roll, dir. Edgar Reitz

    In the mid-19th century, hundreds of thousands of Europeans emigrated to faraway South America. It was a desperate bid to escape the famine, poverty and despotism that ruled at home. Their motto was, “Any fate is better than death". Edgar Reitz's new film Home from Home is a domestic drama and love story set against the backdrop of this forgotten tragedy. It centres around two brothers who realise that only their dreams can save them.

    Inside Llewyn Davis follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Llewyn Davis is at a crossroads. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles -some of them of his own making. Living at the mercy of both friends and strangers, hunting down what work he can find, Llewyn's misadventures take him from the baskethouses of the Village to an empty Chicago club - on an odyssey to audition for a music mogul - and back again.

    Mary Queen of Scots spends her childhood in France and is destined to become the Queen of France. However, her ailing husband dies and the young widow returns alone to Scotland, a country devastated by war. Elizabeth has just become Queen of England; for Mary she is like a twin sister to whom she can open her heart. Mary weds again and gives birth to an heir to the throne. Her second husband, Lord Darnley, proves to be a weakling. When Mary finds the love of her life, the Earl of Bothwell, a series of dramatic events unfolds that will find its grim finale on the scaffold.

    Buenos Aires. Marcial starts working as a night watchman at a factory warehouse. He makes his rounds every night and his only entertainment is watching the area and the lives of the neighbours. He seems quiet and taciturn. Everything appears to be normal, monotonous and boring, until Christmas Eve when Marcial takes a gun and breaks into a house across the street to kill someone...
