THE OSCAR® NOMINATIONS WERE ANNOUNCED

The thing that is anticipated every year by millions of cinema fans has finally happened – the nominations for the Oscars®, the most prestigious awards in the world, were announced. Among them, of course, there were also quite a few titles presented at the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival.

Just like in the case of this year’s American Society of Cinematographers' awards, two winners of the previous edition of our festival will compete for the Oscar® for the best cinematography. Bruno Delbonnel (ASC, AFC), the winner of the Silver Frog for his film The Tragedy of Macbeth, has received already his sixth nomination to Academy Award. Joel Coen’s latest film was the opening piece of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival, presented to the Toruń audience by both filmmakers. His competitor this year is Greig Fraser (ASC, ACS), who received his second Oscar® nomination for his spectacular cinematography in Dune. In November, he won the Bronze Frog for his work on the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert's prose, and he visited EnergaCAMERIMAGE with Denis Villeneuve, who was honored with the Special Camerimage Award for Outstanding Director.

The second woman ever nominated for an Oscar® for the best cinematography was Ari Wegner (ACS), who personally presented The Power of the Dog to participants of our festival. The latest film by Jane Campion leads the number of this year's nominations - it received twelve of them. Janusz Kamiński has also joined the list of nominees for his newest collaboration with Steven Spielberg - an adaptation of the hit musical West Side Story. This is the seventh nomination for the Golden Frog winner, who has so far won two Academy Awards for the films Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Dan Laustsen also has a chance for his first Oscar® as well for his work on Nightmare Alley directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

The list of Oscar® nominees in the Best Cinematography category:

• Janusz Kamiński – West Side Story
• Dan Laustsen (ASC, DFF) – Nightmare Alley

In addition to Dune and The Power of the Dog, Oscar® nominations in the Best Picture category went to two more films screened at EnergaCAMERIMAGE in 2021: King Richard (6 nominations in total) and Belfast (7 nominations). With his nominations added this year, Kenneth Branagh has become an Oscar® record holder – over his whole career he has already received nominations in seven different categories. Let us remind you that the director came to EnergaCAMERIMAGE to show his Belfast to the Polish audience, together with cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos. Jay Rosenblatt, the winner of the Outstanding Achievements in Documentary Filmmaking in 2016, has a chance for his first Oscar® for short When We Were Bullies. Cyrano, a film from last year's President of Jury Joe Wright, also received a nomination.

Other films with a chance for an Oscar® from the EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2021 catalogue are: the opening film of the festival, Parallel Mothers, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Tick, Tick... boom!, The Hand of God, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) and the winner of the 2020 Bronze Tadpole, The Dress.
