PLUS CAMERIMAGE 2009 POSTER

Michał Batory is one of the most outstanding contemporary poster artists. He was born in Łódź but has lived in France for 20 years now. His works comprise a vast collection of various posters for stage plays, music concerts, cultural and social events and issues and also album covers design, book covers design, photography etc. Among his commissioners one can find Théâtre National de la Colline, Larousse publishing house, famous Pompidou Centre, experimental music studio IRCAM, French radio, Chaillot Theatre and many others.

The graphic language of Michał Batory makes reference to the traditions of the Polish school of poster art and to its most remarkable exponents including Henryk Tomaszewski, Roman Cieślewicz, or Jan Młodożeniec.

His elaborated posters also derive from the achievements of the Surrealist Artists which were also often used as inspiration by the abovementioned artists and their followers. The fact that Batory mastered his skills in France allowed him to develop his own individual and recognizable style based on two different cultures. One of these cultures was the eastern European one, hidden behind the “iron curtain", where he grew up and studied. The other culture that influenced him was the western culture which provided him an abundance of modern tools and graphic techniques. Although he is not a pioneer of joining the graphic elements with processed and transformed photography, he has achieved through this technique a curious, sensual effect with simplicity being its strength. Batory often uses trivial objects from everyday life, which he then processes and fills with a coded content. The semantic message of his works gains a great richness of content and places itself in the foreground, at the same time his works strike a viewer with its simple but sophisticated form.
