This year the International Festival of the Art of Cinematography PLUS CAMERIMAGE starts a co-operation with the American Film Institute, the prestigious organization dedicated to promotion of every aspect of American cinema.

The Single Chip Camera Evaluation of 2011 started as a whim and ended as a monster project involving a staggering 772 people. It was originally conceived as a project to draw attention to the website of camera accessory maker Zacuto, who asked Robert Primes ASC to administer a comprehensive test of single chip cameras in Hollywood. Primes insisted on complete autonomy and that the evaluation be freely available to the public. Zacuto agreed to fund the project for exclusive internet documentary rights. The 3-part feature-length documentary is called Zacuto's great Camera Shootout of 2011.

Under the banner "Image Quality Geeks", Primes gathered elite Hollywood geeks, including cinematographers Stephen Lighthill ASC, Nancy Schreiber ASC and Matt Siegel. 35mm film is pitted against the 11 most interesting single chip digital cine cameras available. The cameras are compared for sharpness, low light sensitivity, exposure latitude, colour, compression, skin tones and motion artefacts. Both objective charts and subjective images are shown and clear explanations render the 25-minute piece accessible to geeks, non-geeks and uber-geeks alike. Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions based on direct comparisons of images shot in carefully controlled conditions.

Stephen Lighthill ASC is currently the chair of the cinematography program at the American Film Institute Conservatory. As part of his role at AFI, Stephen leads the education of cinematographers in AFI's MFA program as Senior Filmmaker In Residence: Cinematography.

A DECADE OF AWARD WINNING AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE (AFI) THESIS FILMS

Each year, the American Film Institute Conservatory enrols 28 applicants from all over the world in its two-year Master Of Fine Arts - graduate level - Cinematography educational program. The leader of the cinematography program, Stephen Lighthill, ASC, presents several AFI Thesis films from the last decade. Each film has won recognition from the American Society Of Cinematographers, the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and at film festivals. Mr. Lighthill will be available to speak about the AFI and answer your questions.

But when Lea finds inspiration in an unexpected place, she turns her new perspective into a rebellion that will bring hope to the other girls.
