Captain, The

In the last, desperate moments of World War II, a young German soldier fighting for survival finds a Nazi captain’s uniform. Impersonating an officer, the man quickly takes on the monstrous identity of the perpetrators he is trying to escape from.

Custody

Myriam and Antoine Besson have divorced. Myriam seeks sole custody of their son Julien to protect him from his father, whom she claims is violent. Antoine pleads his case as a scorned father and the judge rules in favour of joint custody. Held hostage to the escalating conflict between his parents, Julien is pushed to the edge to prevent the worst from happening.

Gentle Creature, A

Inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novella, the story takes us into a realm of crime without punishment. Somewhere in the modern Russian countryside lives a woman with a particularly enchanting, serene visage. A parcel she previously sent to her incarcerated husband is returned to sender without any explanation. The woman resolves to personally visit her beloved. Following his trail, she ends up in a Kafkaesque prison-city. The officials refuse to divulge any details about the inmate. The only answer the wife receives is ‘classified information’.
Her path leads through consecutive circles of a figurative hell, represented here by Russia itself, morally and institutionally corrupt at every level. Is there anyone left she can trust?

After three years, Aaron returns to his old estate after hearing about the death of his younger brother Tom. Aaron soon crosses paths with his old circles, learning that his cousin Ryan is in debt to Shane Waldron. Aaron knows Shane only too well, having dealt drugs for him in the past. He takes on Ryan’s debt in order to stop Shane from taking their Grandma’s house. Aaron finds himself back in a life of crime just to raise the money. In a race against the clock and with obstacles in his way, he seeks help from his ex-girlfriend Danielle and cousin Ryan. Aaron pulls out all the stops, but in the process he uncovers some dark secrets about his past.

I Am Not a Witch

Nine-year-old Shula is sent to a detention camp for ‘witches’. Women who end up being shunned by the community are isolated there, forced into hard labour, and treated as a tourist attraction. Each witch has a white sash strapped to her back to guarantee she won't fly off. The movie itself is heavily grounded in realism, which ensures that the fairy-tale, mystical world feels authentic. Exoticism is well-balanced with homeliness, symbolism with real-life drama, and a dash of folk poetics with humour. The movie also owes much of its character to the young and phenomenal Maggie Mulubwa in the leading role. All these elements create a magical cinematic mixture that is sure to keep the audience captivated long after they have left the theatre.
