From 20th to 22nd September 2008 the 7th CINEC, International Trade Fair for Motion Picture Technology will take place in Munich. Plus Camerimage will be there presenting its activity.

THE NEW CENTRE OF ŁÓDŹ PROJECT

"The open city operation" will transform a 90-hectare area in the center of Łódź into a new functional city center with many vibrant public spaces and a rich offer of different cultural institutions. The Special Culture Zone, the one and only among the various special economic zones, will be right in the heart of the New Center. In its exact middle, the city has planned to build the Special Art Zone, a modern construction incorporating the exposition and museum functions. It will, in other words, expand the functions of an art center or a museum of modern art. The Special Art Zone will be a place with exhibition, museum-collecting, educational, and recreational purposes, strongly connected with the tradition of the Museum of Art in Łódź, cooperating with the most remarkable galleries and museums of modern and contemporary arts in the whole world.

Modern city center structure
The idea of building in Łódź a new center somewhere downtown - presently, a lifeless area covering several dozen hectares of inactive factories, warehouses, brushwood, coal depots and railway tracks - stems from the idea of creating Kobro* Square. Within the limits of the square, located next to the Special Art Zone building, an underground railway station and a bus station will be developed; on the east side - the Festival & Congress Center (the structure will become Plus Camerimage Festival Center); the south frontage will be enclosed by the revalorized building complex of 100-year-old EC1 power station, where David Lynch Center and Arts of the World Foundation will be situated. The cultural and noncommercial heart of the New Center will serve as a base around which a new “city tissue" will grow.
The essential part of the transformation is to create modern transportation solutions, thus optimizing communication services and binding the local, regional and international transport functions in this region.

Initiators and executors
The Project has been run by the Institution of Culture "EC1 Łódź - Miasto Kultury" and the Polish State Railways (PKP S.A. and PKP PLK S.A.) with the support of Łódź City Council since August 2007. The scale and variety of the investments planned in this area constitute an enormous challenge for both development and executive companies. Furthermore, the Project is aided by its initiator, Arts of the World Foundation, founded by David Lynch, Marek Żydowicz (Plus Camerimage Festival Director) and Andrzej Walczak (architect, businessman and art gallery owner), all of them actively participating in the enterprise.

Future benefit
The core of the New Center of Łódź Project is that it is not designed to be a festival of attractions, but an opportunity to gradually, yet radically, change the existing lifestyle of the city’s inhabitants. The whole undertaking is to be accomplished in 2015.





* Katarzyna Kobro, sculpturer, is considered one of the greatest Polish artists, despite having been underestimated for many years. In the first half of the 20th century, her art definitely outpaced the achievements of the European fine arts. She belonged to the a.r. group of artists and poets, popular before World War II. The group was responsible for the establishment in Łódź of Poland's first (second in the world) contemporary art collection.
