One of the most prestigious parts of the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography PLUS CAMERIMAGE is its workshops. Lead by eminent cinematographers and professionals of the film industry, each year the workshops become a one-of-a-kind experience for all who love cinema.

We proudly present the list of ARRI and OSRAM workshops which will take place during the 20th edition of Plus Camerimage.






Lighting and Camerawork for Different Formats
with Danny Cohen, BSC
A masterclass on shooting with 16mm, 35mm and digital

Danny Cohen, BSC, the Oscar, BAFTA and ASC Award-nominated cinematographer of The King's Speech, will be presenting an ARRI workshop at Plus Camerimage this year.

Much respected for his work on films including Stephen Poliakoff's Glorious 39 and TV shows such as This is England '88, Cohen recently completed shooting the major feature film adaptation of Les Misérables. This 35mm project saw him working alongside the Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper, with whom he had previously collaborated on The King's Speech, John Adams and Longford.

Cohen notes, “Choice of format can play a role in defi ning the lighting and camerawork options available when deciding how to cover a scene. Working with a two-room set that will allow some movement and variation, we will explore the different approaches possible when working with 16mm, 35mm and digital cameras."

Audience members will be invited to help crew the ARRIFLEX 416, ARRICAM Lite and ARRI ALEXA cameras used during the workshop, and wireless accessories will allow a live monitor view of the action at all times.

Black-and-White Cinematography & the ALEXA
with Gernot Roll, BVK
A complete workflow demonstration for digital black-and-white

Cinematographer Gernot Roll, BVK, whose recent work on The Man with the Bassoon was recognized with an audience award for best miniseries at Germany's prestigious Bambi Awards in 2011, will present a Camerimage workshop on shooting black-and-white with the ARRI ALEXA.

ARRI has developed a special version of the ALEXA with a black-and-white sensor, allowing cinematographers to create a more carefully crafted monochrome look than can be achieved by simply desaturating a color image.

Roll notes, “I miss black-and-white - it is the most artifi cial and abstract form of cinematography, which makes it highly expressive. Just think of the incredible shadows in that scene of Orson Welles being chased through the streets of Vienna in The Third Man. Has the knowledge of how to filter for black-and-white been lost? Can digital processes replace such expertise? These are the issues we will explore."

Florian ‘Utsi' Martin, colorist at the ARRI Headquarters in Munich, will perform a live grade of material shot during the workshop. The possibility of infrared cinematography will be discussed and test footage of the black-and-white sensor will be screened, as well as selected clips from the Heimat trilogy, Roll's latest collaboration with director Edgar Reitz.

ARRI and OSRAM: Interior Lighting Techniques
with Oliver Stapleton, BSC
A masterclass on lighting interior sets in the studio

Oliver Stapleton, BSC, the acclaimed cinematographer of The Cider House Rules, Buffalo Soldiers and Ned Kelly, will be leading an ARRI and OSRAM lighting workshop at Plus Camerimage 2012. Stapleton's recent credits include Will, starring Bob Hoskins and Damian Lewis, and The Guilt Trip, starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen.

The workshop will be co-sponsored by ARRI and OSRAM, two Munich-based companies that have 100 years of experience developing lamps and lighting systems. Their ongoing collaboration has brought about technology breakthroughs such as the ARRI M90/60, which includes the entirely new HMI® 9000W/SE metal halide lamp.

Stapleton notes, “In this hands-on workshop we will work with ARRI fixtures and OSRAM bulbs to try out different ways of lighting an interior set. By incorporating light coming in from outside, we can create light beams and develop atmosphere. We can also illustrate various ways of dealing with out-of-focus exteriors through windows, for those situations when the production designer can't afford to make a backdrop."

Working with the ARRI ALEXA, Stapleton will invite members of the audience to help operate the camera and lighting equipment.

Digital Imaging with LEDs: More Than Meets the Eye
with Ryan Fletcher, ARRI Lighting Platform Manager
The challenges of accurate color rendition with digital lighting & cameras

Advances in solid-state illumination technology are now making LED luminaires practical for many television and motion picture applications. LED lighting provides the benefi ts of reduced power consumption and less cooling requirements. It also provides the opportunity for color adjustments without the need for gels, but the light emissions from LEDs have fundamentally different chromaticity than the familiar tungsten and HMI luminaires in use today.

LED lighting is sure to be a ubiquitous tool for the emerging generation of cinematographers and gaffers, so these challenges must be understood and overcome. ARRI Lighting Platform Manager Ryan Fletcher will explore the various issues, drawing on his experiences developing LED systems for ARRI.

Fletcher notes, “This presentation will review the fundamentals of making white light with LEDs, including trichromatic and pumped phosphor systems. You will learn why illumination with identical color temperature measurements can look very different to the eye, and even more different to a digital camera."

The workshop will also explore the relationship between trichromatic illumination and three-color camera sensors. In addition, attendees will hear about why new emerging standards for measuring illumination quality will be important in the future.
